The Bluff Stream Kauri Waitawheta Valley walk starts to the south west of the historical goldmining town of Waihi, gateway to the Coromandel Peninsula, where gold is still mined to this day.
We leave our transport at the end of the road and start our hike by following the riverbank through farm paddocks. Once in the native New Zealand bush we see the old original tramway for the first time. As we are walking by the tramway along the edge of the river, we realise what feat of engineering this was to build along this difficult route.
Next we climb up a spur and follow the path through NZ bush with a view down into a stream valley meandering through groves of natives tree ferns and ancient podocarp forest we come all of a sudden into the arms of the largest kauri tree left in the Kaimai Mamaku Forest Park.
