The Otanewainuku walk through native bush reaches a lookout point that provides views of Mt Taranaki or Tongariro in the distance on a clear day.

Type of walk: Lowland Bush

Time, overall:

3 1/2 hr from Tauranga, including travel time
Walking for 2 hr plus lunch stop of 1/2 hr.
Leave Tauranga 10am, back at 2pm

Track conditions:

Route easy to follow, the track becomes steeper as you approach the summit.

Grading/Fitness required:

Leisurely-Moderate as there is some uphill walking.

Recommendations:

Walk is all in native New Zealand bush so OK for hot sunny day.
Take binoculars for looking for other North Island mountains from the lookout point.

Points of interest:

  • Views of Mt Taranaki or Tongariro in the distance on a good day, bring your binoculars.
  • A relatively short walk for such a wide view
  • The walk starts from the car park on Mountain Rd
  • Toilet just along track
  • Golf course and fruit shop at end of road – should you have room more for in your day.

Grades Choices:

Leisurely - Moderate: Mainly flat but with some uphill walking involved, a fairly slow hike
