Waipu Bay loop walk covers a variety of beaches, mudflats, and tar sealed pavements in Tauranga

3-5 hr from Tauranga,
Walking for  hr 15 min including lunch stop of 1/2 hr.
Leave Tauranga 9:30, back at 3pm

Track conditions

Route easy to follow from a map, though not marked with signposts
The walking is over sandy beaches, fairly solid mudflats, and tar sealed pavements.

Recommendations

Tide needs to be out for this walk, enquire for tide times on preferred dates
Take binoculars for sea bird and looking across the bay
Have fish at the fish and chip shop at the end of The Strand - always fresh and freshly cooked - delicious after walking the Waipu Bay Loop!

  • The walk starts either at Tauranga, seafront carpark or carpark at end of totara st         
  • Lunch at a drift wood tree which offers seating for several people. Or on The Strand, pub or cafe
  • Toilet blocks on The Strand in Tauranga
  • Shops and cafes at Tauranga which is either the beginning and end, or middle if start in Totara st.
  • There is a locally famous Maori canoe stored in a special open sided shed at the end of The Strand

Grading/Fitness required

Leisurely - walk unaided over slightly uneven ground. Mainly flat, a fairly slow walk - coastal beach and mud flats walk described above.

Moderate: Some short inclines but mainly flat - Daisy Hardwick Walkway and Tauranga inner harbour (Waipu Bay)

Energetic: Brisk with inclines - Walk to Matakana Island and Daisy Hardwick Walkway
