Wairongomai Buck Rock Loop
New Zealand

Type of walk

The Wairongomai Buck Rock Loop is a cutover Lowland Bush walk, following mining tramways, and with a final scramble to the viewpoint

Duration

Wairongomai Valley, New Zealand

All day, generally leave Tauranga 9:30, back at 4.30-5.30pm

Track conditions

Route easy to follow. Track slippery on inclines under tree ferns (Mamaku), level on the pack tracks

Recommendations

Take swimming togs on a hot sunny day as there may be an opportunity for a swim in a natural river.

Points of interest

  • Fantastic view from top - a jagged rock rising above the surrounding plains
  • Self acting incline used for gold ore extraction
  • Lunch at top of bucks reef, looking down on the Waikato plains; or at the Old Bendigo Battery and have a dip in the river
  • Afterwards visit shops, cafes, or hot pools in the nearby historic town of Te Aroha, locally famous as having the only hot soda water geyser in the world

Grading/Fitness required
