Wairongomai to Te Aroha:

A full day. Starting among the mining relics in cutover bush we visit self acting inclines, mine openings, and relics. Our day takes us to the highest peak in the Kaimai Ranges, Mt Te Aroha, 952m, resulting in a spectacular 360 view from Mount Maunganui to Matamata. Here we take a break and enjoy the view, before wending our way down to the historic spa town of Te Aroha.

Points of interest

Wairongomai is an area of the Kaimais that is south of Te Aroha, itself a Victorian Spa town, with well preserved buildings offering various bathing options in the Te Aroha domain
Wairongomai was a thriving town at the turn of the century, now all that remains is one stone chimney in the middle of a paddock.

Many tree ferns of all types can be seen in Wairongomai. This is because about 100 years ago the bush was cut down to facilitate gold mining. Tree ferns are one of the first plants to grow back naturally.
