This Wairongomai to Mt Te Aroha walk is in lowland Bush, it follows level mining tramways and steep bush tracks, sometimes with steps, resulting in a spectacular 360 view from the mountain.

Wairongomai Valley, New Zealand

All day, generally leave Tauranga 8:30, back at 5.30-6.30pm.

Track conditions

Route easy to follow, level on the pack tracks, steep on the inclines and on track to Mt Te Aroha.

Recommendations

Take plenty of water as there are limited stops on route

Points of interest

  • Fantastic view from Mt Te Aroha, the highest point around, rising above the surrounding plains and bush clad hills.
  • Self acting incline used for gold ore extraction
  • The walk starts at the end of Wairongomai Loop Rd and finishes in Te Aroha.
  • Afterwards visit shops, cafes, or hotpools in the historic town of Te Aroha, locally famous as having the only hot soda water geyser in the world.
